DIY rake $4

DW wanted a torch to remove clippings from the grass, while I just wanted to leave it like that…so I built a torch.

The rake is made from 2 x 4 foot long 2 x 4’s that I ripped up [lengthwise] Chainsaw. I used one part for the handle and the other part for the torch (beam) itself. The 19 teeth came from two $0.99 3/8″ screws cut to 2.5 inches. They are spaced 5/4″ apart in 1/2″ deep holes that I drilled using a brace and a drill. It is glued. The handle is mounted on the rake by a tongue drawn by an offset dowel which also makes the middle tooth; This did not stick in allowing me to disassemble the rake again. The holes were made with a chisel. This joint is completely solid with no give, so I didn’t have to put in diagonal supports which would have complicated the matter.

The rake works very well. The grass does not stick to the teeth. This always seems to be the case with metal pistons which bothers me. However, the rake is a bit heavy, perhaps thanks to the bulky handle. I didn’t want to spend a lot of time planning it. Maybe if I get tired of the weight, I’ll reduce it further and make a perfectly balanced torch.

In conclusion, I think I now have a better torch for 3-5 times less than the cost of purchasing one.

Note: It is possible to get a $1 fire starter at a yard sale or get one in a free tournament. However, according to the first paragraph, this was an urgent matter.
