Celebrating My Daughter’s Engagement: Approaching Wedding Traditions and Finances with a Heart Full of Gratitude

Watching my oldest daughter’s engagement last week was so exciting. She came into our lives when she was an older teenager, and since then, we’ve built memories together and formed a bond that I cherish more than I can express. Now, as we start planning the wedding, I find myself thinking about the balance between traditional expectations and the financial reality of planning a modern wedding.

Engaged, date not specified

While we expected this to happen. None of us knew it would come so quickly. He asked for my permission and I was thrilled to welcome him into the family. I was shocked when he got down on one knee in front of our local waterfall and popped the question.

No date has been set, but for now, we are planning a long engagement. She is adamant that she wants a small, very intimate wedding.

Tradition versus modern options

Here’s a glimpse into our journey, especially when it comes to navigating wedding traditions through a financial lens:

1. Where: Traditional halls versus budget-friendly options At many traditional weddings, one of the biggest expenses is the venue – often a lavish hall or a picturesque location. However, for us, the focus is less on greatness and more on intimacy. We explore local community spaces, parks, or even a family member’s property that would create a comfortable and welcoming environment. It’s incredible to see my daughter embrace this approach, valuing meaningful memories over an expensive backdrop.
2. The Guest List: Family and Community Versus Cohesive Affordability Traditionally, weddings can be large gatherings, with guest lists that grow to include family and community members. However, we are mindful of the financial aspect, and my daughter prioritizes a smaller, more intentional guest list, focusing on those who have played an important role in her life. It’s a decision that would help keep us on budget while making the celebration feel very personal.
3. The Wedding Dress: Traditional Elegance vs. Financial Practicality Growing up, my daughter never really dreamed of a particular wedding dress, and now she’s thrilled to choose something beautiful and affordable. While traditional wedding dresses can be expensive, she is exploring options like consignment stores, sample sales, and even rentals. Her willingness to consider alternatives reflects her practicality and independence, qualities that I admire very much. (We’ll be doing a dress shopping day with her best friend and the princess at the bridal store. This will help narrow down the styles and then figure out how to get what she wants affordably. And we have a mom veil so she’ll plan on wearing that.)

The planning has just begun

This planning process has only just begun. We’re jotting down a list of the traditions we respect and the financial awareness we embrace. Each choice will be rooted in love and practicality, with a little joy for the new chapter ahead. I couldn’t be prouder or more grateful for her support on this unique journey.
