There’s nothing like a road trip to spark some fun and nostalgic memories. Stop for food and snacks, choose the perfect driving music, and stop to take pictures of the scenery along the way. But before you start packing up your station wagon, keep in mind that while taking a road trip to your destination may seem like a budget-friendly option, with costs adding up everywhere, unless you pay close attention and plan ahead, it’s easy to lose track of the many small purchases and expenses you’ll encounter along the way.

1. Stop more for picnics and less for fast food.
Food and snacks are an important part of any good road trip, but the cost of driving, coffee stops, and other snacks along the way can take a big chunk out of your budget.
So, instead of buying all your meals and drinks on the trip, consider packing a fridge with a picnic for most of your food on the trip. If you’re traveling with family and kids, stock the fridge with a good mix of healthy foods and “treats,” and encourage each family member, including the kids—if they’re old enough—to suggest an item or items to include on the picnic.
If you’re traveling with friends, you can ask each member of your traveling group to contribute supplies for the picnic. Or you can pool your money and shop together, saving you the cost of buying full-sized snacks at the grocery store compared to buying small-sized snacks at convenience stores and gas stations.
Carry easy-to-pack and travel foods like sandwiches or wraps, fruits and vegetables, chips, granola bars, crackers, etc. Not only will you save money by making travel snacks, you’ll also avoid a lot of added sugars, fats, and sodium from drive-thru foods.
