Shopping for shoes but no

Yesterday, Beauty and I went to the stores about an hour away by car. The goal was to find some good, supportive, non-slip shoes for my part-time job at a fast food restaurant. I have two pairs of shoes they gave me. However, after six months, my back is hurting badly.

I’m definitely not used to standing for long hours. Well, I usually stand for 3-6 hours a few times a week. But I haven’t done that in over 3 decades. And now I dread going to work because of the pain I know is coming. (Also, my most comfortable shoes now stink, but that’s another issue I have to figure out.)

Oh my god, the cost of work boots.

Now I know that Walmart carries non-slip shoes. All the kids at the fast food restaurants there bought work shoes. But I had heard so many good things about the comfort of Skechers shoes that I decided that this was just what I needed to help relieve my back pain – support and comfort!

When I told you I was shocked at the price of those shoes, you were surprised.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for quality shoes and willing to pay for them. But in my extensive experience watching my five children work full-time over the years that these shoes required… they don’t last. They need to be replaced regularly. Not a single pair was less than $65, and most were over $85.

These jobs pay a little more than minimum wage, and most of the people working there are part-time. For example, I make between $100 and $200 every two weeks. That’s not a lot of money.

My daughter pointed that out.

As I was trying on some shoes, it was my daughter who pointed out, “Mom, you’re going to spend more on shoes than you make in two weeks. And you know you’ll have to replace them in a few months. They get wet and smelly.”Wise girl, I wonder where you get that wisdom?! – I’m kidding, don’t jump on me.)

I thought I found a pair of shoes for $64, but then I realized they weren’t non-slip. So I left empty-handed.

We tried three other stores to no avail.

I reconsidered and decided I would at least put up with it a little longer. I had other things I would rather spend that kind of money on. It was nice to get out of the house. But it didn’t make sense to spend half my monthly income on a pair of shoes that I would likely need to replace by the end of the year.

Maybe I need some slippers with help? And I need to figure out how to deal with the smell.
