Many of you who have followed my journey know that my mother has been in hospice care for almost two years. In fact, two years ago, they asked me to come right away and say goodbye. They didn’t expect it to last much longer. Parkinson’s sucks!
I love seeing my family. But it was so hard to say goodbye every time I came back to visit.
The end may be near
This trip was a little different. The signs are there. The end may be near. He begins to have difficulty swallowing or refuses to eat.
But this post is not about that. It’s about the amazing care I’ve seen every time I’ve visited. My father and siblings provide round-the-clock care. They are tireless in their pursuit of what is best for Mom’s care. They spend hours every day getting her basic nutrition. Then add sweets on top of that.
They keep careful notes. They bathe her, change her clothes, and check her for any signs of bedsores. Turn it several times a day. They sit with her. Watch movies with her. Make sure she has moisturizer on her lips and clean her glasses.
The dedication and love for my family shows love in action like I have never seen or experienced before. So I will make this trip whenever I am asked to. Because the self-sacrifice my family embodies every day is inspiring!
But other than that, this trip also showed me how settled I am in the new phase of my life. How much I enjoy being at home. Not chasing the constant adventure journey I so craved. While I’m still drawn to the road sometimes, what I really want to do is stay home and wander around my house and yard.
