Family size – really?

In the last 5-6 months, I’ve been really limited in what I eat. What you bought. I lived on sandwiches, eggs, bacon, and some fruits and vegetables. This is not a complaint at all. I thoroughly enjoyed my food. I chose it as the main ingredient in my selection. I didn’t feel rejected. This has really helped me keep my food spending under control.

But for the past two weeks, I’ve been craving cereal. (Yes, I know, it’s not a healthy choice at all.) But just sometimes… well, I had my grocery budget for the month and this week in Texas (where I’m now), I had a little room to splurge.

Another aspect of this is that I rarely go grocery shopping. I rarely go to stores anymore. I order my food for pickup most of the time. (There is no charge for pickup.) This means I haven’t had much exposure to how things have changed in the past couple of years.

After I picked Beauty up from work one evening, we ran to Walmart to buy some groceries. Wow, it was the cereal aisle that opened my eyes to how things have changed. With five kids, we always bought everything family size. It made sense in terms of price and quantity.

So when I went to pick up my precious cereal, I was shocked to find that the “family size” was now the regular size, i.e. much smaller. And the price…is still higher. This is so crazy.

I’ve never been immune to discussions of the high cost of food, but since I went from buying for a family of 6 to 3 and now to 1 very quickly, my food budget has dropped quickly. I didn’t really notice the individual prices going up.

The visit to the grain aisle was remarkable in many ways.

These boxes of cereal will last me months. I will thoroughly enjoy it. And I’m so grateful that I was able to “spend” this month. But I am even more grateful that I am not a mother struggling to feed her five children at this time.
