You get paid to gain new skills, get extra money, and advance your treatment

It’s been a long time since a client has paid me to gain new skills. When you’re a freelancer, clients expect you to know how to do the job. But I was lucky that my new client was willing to invest in training me to be a newsletter writer!

This new assignment has reignited my passion for writing. It’s very easy to become complacent when you keep doing the same type of tasks over and over again. There’s not much of a mental challenge anymore, which can make things feel stale. Additionally, it’s a bad idea for your resume to pigeonhole yourself into one type of writing or one field. So, it’s great to have the opportunity to get out of my professional comfort zone and still earn the extra money I need.

This new gig requires me to get really creative. I write about the mental models and biases that can cause business owners to make poor decisions. But I explain it using pop culture references and humor. I’m encouraged to bring my whole personality into my writing and to think outside the box, which is very good! I truly believe that this is an area of ​​writing that ChatGPT won’t be able to replace anytime soon, so I’m grateful to have gained these skills.

Additional money coming

In addition to the extra money from this new gig, we received a tax refund and a $900 escrow refund from our mortgage company. We also learned that our mortgage payments are dropping by $50 a month since our escrow account is well funded. Although escrow shortages and surpluses seem cyclical, it’s nice to receive a check in the mail to store up your savings and good news that your payment is going down for a while.

Additionally, this month is an extra salary month for my partner.

The money goes directly into savings for home/car repairs

Naturally, all this extra money goes into savings because we may have some house and car maintenance expenses. Our well seems to have some sort of slow leak due to the way the pump works.

A technician came to check it out, but he couldn’t figure out what was going wrong. From my research, it appears that an underground pipe may be the cause of the leak. On the high end, this type of repair can cost $1,600 because they have to dig into the ground to get to the pipes. Hopefully it’s something as simple as a part that needs to be replaced, but we’ll just have to wait and see. Another, more experienced technician will come in to evaluate the situation soon, so we’ll have more answers then.

Our car’s solenoid also needs to be replaced, which will cost about $150. As they say, money comes and money goes! But it’s good that we got some refunds and extra money to cover these expenses.

Treatment is going well!

I think I’m heading into my first full month of treatment this week. So far things are going well and I have been able to make a lot of progress. Since my old therapist was no longer practicing, I had to choose a new therapist. I think we click better than I did with my last therapist.

We delve deeper into self-regulation and emotional coping strategies. My therapist is helping me learn how to master mindfulness and respond to my body’s emotional and physical needs before I reach a crisis point.

In the past, I didn’t think I was open to mindfulness because it can be difficult to be truly present in my body. To deal with and overcome the symptoms of my chronic illness, I was encouraged to ignore the feelings and sensations in my body, even by doctors.

This approach has helped me “stretch my muscles” on a day when I’m not feeling well. But the dangerous part of ignoring my body to this degree was that I would never be able to meet its needs, so I reached the point of exhaustion faster. Especially when I face other stressors in my life, such as my relative’s illness.

Learn a gentler approach to productivity

My therapist is helping me learn that getting through the day doesn’t have to mean completely ignoring my body. Since I work from home, there are so many big and small ways I can check in with my body and take care of myself. Whether it’s stopping to stretch, making myself a cup of tea, or even taking a power nap, I can listen to my emotional and physical cues to make it easier for my body to get things done. I’m not a student anymore, so I don’t have to be tied to my desk!

I believe this gentler approach to productivity could be a game-changer for my ability to work more sustainably. Additionally, I believe that treating my ADHD also makes it easier to maintain a greater workload. It feels like things are going like never before, so I feel more positive about my ability to achieve my career and financial goals.

What I’ve learned from financial anxiety

I hope these updates are not boring to read and we hope they reach the ears of people who are suffering. Through my own financial anxiety, I’ve learned that sometimes financial fears and struggles can indicate larger problems in your life that you may need professional help to address. It takes time and work to find the right support, medications, and treatment providers, but it’s worth the effort.

I know that self-improvement (financially, emotionally, professionally, etc.) will be an ongoing process for me, so I’m not “done,” but I’m glad that at least I feel like I’m generally on the right track now. I hope that I won’t need treatment forever and that I can continue the journey on my own in a few months. Of course there are still difficult moments here and there, that’s just life! But I don’t feel as “lost” as I did when I started writing this blog. I think many of you realized this from my initial posts even though I was denying it at the time.
