Modern homes are a wondrous reflection of our culture. They have brick facades that are not part of the structure. They are built of sticks with plastic insulation being the main barrier between residents and the elements. In essence, they are like large plastic boxes designed with the look of houses but without most of the functionality. Windows don’t open. Shutters nailed to the walls. Meadows are not cultivated, but are thrown away. It makes one wonder what kind of idealism the residents are striving for. Internally, the climate is controlled by machines to maintain a constant temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Welcome to life in a bubble. But I digress.
My main point is to discuss clothing storage. Clothes were stored in boxes, and later in closets. Today, we have a lot of clothes that we store on the walls.
Now you can (obviously) purchase various storage solutions, but it’s easy to create your own. My closet has a clothes hanger bar and two wide shelves above it. I don’t have a wardrobe, my wife has the closet. What I did was hang shirts, pants, robes, etc. on clothes hangers. On the shelves I put shirts, socks and underwear. I separate them with two small cardboard boxes. The cardboard boxes contain shoe polish and ties respectively. On the top shelf I keep a couple of sweatshirts and some jeans. Next to that is my collection of tools. A GPS, binoculars, a shortwave radio, a Stetson hat, and a sleeping bag next to it. Under the clothes hanger I have a large bag containing out-of-season clothes. Besides that I have various bags. There are also two hooks that hold an umbrella, baseball cap, and 8 Octane bottle.
Most apartments and houses today have a closet like this. So there is no reason to buy furniture for storage

It is useful in old housing. Before moving here, we lived in a 1920s house with very small closets, meaning the closets were just right for a family of four at the time the house was built, but were too small for two contemporary people. sad.
